Ibou Thior
Dr. Ibou Thior is an HAI Representative in Botswana, and the Project Director of the BotswanaHAI Partnership for HIV Research and Education.
Dr. Thior received a doctor of medicine degree from Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, Senegal before obtaining a diploma in tropical medicine, a master's degree in occupational medicine from Cheikh Anta Diop University and a master's of science in epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health.
Dr. Thior has been involved in HIV-1 and HIV-2 research studies with HAI since 1987, when he joined The Inter-University Research Convention between France (Tours, Limoges), Senegal (Cheikh Anta Diop) and U.S.A (Harvard School of Public Health) to investigate the natural history of HIV viruses.
A native of Senegal, Dr. Thior's research has included examining the effects of HIV on population groups in Senegal, particularly female commercial sex workers.
Currently in Botswana, Dr. Thior heads a study on mother-to-child transmission (MTCT). The study examines potential benefits of adding nevirapine to the current Botswana national PMTCT program (ZDV) to prevent the transmission of HIV from mother to child and the effectiveness of ZDV given to infants to prevent transmission during breastfeeding.
Trials that Dr. Thior's team at the BotswanaHAI Partnership (PMTCT, antiretroviral treatment and drug resistance study, HIV vaccine preparedness and trials) are conducting have very important implications for public health efforts for women and infants in Africa.
