“Through generously funding my education at Harvard, the Oak Foundation transformed my life. I hope to use my training to similarly transform the lives of many others by improving their health.”
- Pride Chigwedere
Former Oak Fellow
With support from the Oak Foundation, the Harvard AIDS Initiative provides in-depth, long-term training for scholars from Zimbabwe and elsewhere. This training program covers a broad spectrum of AIDS issues, including mother-to-infant intervention, vaccine development, treatment issues, and behavior modification. Students receive training in virology, epidemiology, immunology, clinical trial design, behavioral sciences, and various other public health policies pertinent to AIDS in resource-scarce countries.
The major goals of this project are to develop and promote innovative prevention strategies designed to protect women and children from acquiring HIV and AIDS, to expand the research base from Botswana to include regional countries, especially Zimbabwe, to initiate new programs for protecting women from infection, and to expand AIDS training for medical experts from Zimbabwe.
