As the number of AIDS cases continues to escalate worldwide, HAI has directed its research efforts toward developing prevention and treatment strategies to stem the epidemic within Africa and other resource scarce settings. Recently, HAI researchers have found that the HIV subtype that exists within AfricaHIV-1Cmutates faster and displays more diversity than any other subtype in the world. As a result, in Africa, researchers are testing the efficacy of an HIV vaccine and new genetic delivery systems; conducting studies on antiretroviral treatment, treatment adherence and drug resistance; and developing interventions to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission.
HAI has been at the forefront of AIDS research since the beginning of the epidemic and has been dedicated to developing research knowledge essential for understanding and preventing the disease. HAI continues to play a pivotal role in the global AIDS effort by developing new ways to understand, treat, and prevent the spread of HIV.
