"Microbicides 2000," an international scientific conference on HIV microbial research, was held March 13-16, 2000 in Washington, DC. The conference was organized by the Office of AIDS Research, National Institutes of Health. The HAI cosponsored the meeting and coordinated the scholarship program.
This first-of-its-kind conference focused on HIV transmission developing the means by which women can become more responsible for maintaining their health and avoiding HIV infection. Because HIV infection rates in developing countries continue to increase in female populations, the topic of the meeting was of vital interest to doctors, researchers, public health officials, and health care providers from developing nations.
The review committee offered sholarships to all those who applied to the program. 208 scholarships were offered to individuals from 34 different countries. The majority of the scholars were from developing countries and many of them received full scholarships to attend "Microbicides 2000." The table below lists the number of scholarships awarded by country.
