The Fogarty International Center of the Unites States’ National Institutes of Health
The Fogarty International Center at the National Institutes of Health promotes and supports scientific research and training internationally to reduce disparities in global health. The Center provides support for the Fogarty International Training Program in AIDS-Related Epidemiology. This training program is intended to help bridge the gap in AIDS research between developing countries and industrialized nations. The Harvard AIDS Institute's Fogarty International Training Program in AIDS-Related Epidemiology brings biomedical researchers and health care workers from developing countries to Harvard University to train in AIDS research techniques and procedures. Beginning in 1996, the Fogarty Center has cosponsored all nine symposia in the Institute’s HIV Vaccines for Developing Countries series. In addition, the center provided support for the National Conference on HIV/AIDS in Botswana in 1997, and the first, second, and third Conference on Global Strategies for the Prevention of HIV Transmission from Mother to Infants held in Washington DC in 1997, Montreal, Canada in 1999, and in Kampala Uganda in 2001. For more information, visit http://www.nih.gov/fic.

The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation
The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation has taken a leadership role in establishing a national pediatric AIDS research agenda, as well as promoting global education, awareness and compassion about HIV/AIDS in children. The foundation supported the HIV Vaccines for Developing Countries: Vaccinating Against the Leading Infectious Killers of Children held in Dakar, Senegal in December 1998. For more information, visit http://www.pedaids.org.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is dedicated to improving people's lives by sharing advances in health and learning with the global community. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation collaborates with the Merck Company Foundation on the African Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Partnership (ACHAP), a five-year, multimillion dollar commitment to help curb the AIDS epidemic in Botswana. The KITSO AIDS Training Program, a collaboration between the Botswana–Harvard AIDS Institute Partnership for HIV Research and Education and the Botswana Ministry of Health, is supported by a grant from ACHAP. For more information, visit http://www.gatesfoundation.org. To learn more about the KITSO AIDS Training Program, visit http://aids.harvard.edu/kitso.

GlaxoSmithKline
GlaxoSmithKline is one of the world's foremost research-based pharmaceutical and healthcare companies. GlaxoSmithKline has provided drugs for mother-to-infant studies in Boston and Botswana. They also provided support for HIV Vaccines for Developing Countries: Establishing Networks for HIV Vaccine Trials in Southern Africa held in Gaborone, Botswana in December 2001. For more information about the company, visit http://www.gsk.com/index.htm.

Global Strategies for HIV Prevention
Global Strategies for HIV Prevention is a nonprofit organization that forms strategic alliances with individuals and groups interested in alleviating the suffering of children and works to implement international strategies to prevent HIV infection. The organization sponsored Global Strategies for the Prevention of HIV Transmission from Mothers-to-Infants, a meeting in which the Institute coordinated the Developing Countries Scholarships Program, in Washington DC in September 1997, in Montreal in September 1999 and in Kampala, Uganda in September 2001. For more information, visit http://www.globalstrategies.org.

HIV Vaccine Trials Network
The HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) conducts all phases of clinical trials, from evaluating candidate vaccines for safety and the ability to stimulate immune responses, to testing vaccine efficacy. The HVTN is an international collaboration of scientists and institutions whose goal is to accelerate the search for an HIV vaccine by sharing trial results and facilitating parallel, concurrent testing. The HVTN is a unique hybrid that combines the depth and diversity of the academic community and the flexibility of a commercial drug company. The HVTN is composed of 27 research institutions worldwide, including HAI and the Botswana-Harvard AIDS Institute Partnership for HIV Research and Education. For more information, visit http://www.hvtn.org.

HOPE worldwide
Founded in 1991, HOPE worldwide is a nonprofit charity organization that develops programs, provides education, and delivers medical services to disadvantaged children in developing communities. The organization supported the National Conference on HIV/AIDS in Botswana held in Gaborone, Botswana in July 1997 and is an ongoing supporter of the Institute. For more information, visit http://www.hopeww.org/.

Institute of Virology, Chinese Academy of Preventative Medicine, Beijing
The Harvard AIDS Institute collaborates with the Institute of Virology, Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine through HAI’s China Initiative. This collaboration involves researcher exchange and joint laboratory ventures dedicated to AIDS vaccine development for China and Africa.

International AIDS Society
The International AIDS Society (IAS) represents the world’s professional society for scientists, health care and public health workers, and others involved in HIV and AIDS prevention, control and care. The IAS co-sponsored the International Symposium on HIV, Leukemia, and Opportunistic Cancers held in Marrakech, Morocco in May 1999. For more information, visit http://www.ias.se/.

International AIDS Vaccine Initiative
The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) is a global organization working to speed the development and distribution of preventive AIDS vaccines. IAVI provided support for four symposia in HAI’s HIV Vaccines for Developing Countries series: Designing Efficacy Trials held in Boston, Massachusetts in October 1996; DNA Vaccines, New Adjuvants, and Novel Delivery Systems held in Boston in April 1997; Immune Correlates of Protection held in Boston in April 1998; and Prioritizing Vaccine Candidates for Human Trials held in Boston in October 1999. For more information, visit the http://www.iavi.org.

International Association for Comparative Research on Leukemia and Related Diseases
The International Association for Comparative Research on Leukemia and Related Diseases stresses the importance of comparative studies in humans and animals, with particular emphasis on retroviral diseases. Its symposium series has been the principal forum for the exchange of research information on leukemia and retroviral disease and a major opportunity for researchers to share current developments in the understanding of HIV and AIDS. The Association and HAI co-sponsored the International Symposium on HIV, Leukemia, and Opportunistic Cancers held in Marrakech, Morocco in May 1999 and Leukemia, Lymphoma and AIDS: Pathogenesis and Treatment held in Padua and Venice in October 2001. For more information, contact C. Russell de Burlo at deBurlo@erols.com.

Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS)
Drawing organizations together in a joint and cosponsored program, the United Nations took an innovative approach to addressing the challenges of HIV and AIDS by pooling the experience, efforts and resources of seven UN organizations. The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS, or UNAIDS, is the main advocate for global action on HIV and AIDS working to prevent the transmission of HIV, provide care and support, reduce the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV and AIDS and alleviate the impact of the epidemic. The Harvard AIDS Institute is an official UNAIDS collaborating center. UNAIDS has been a longtime supporter of HAI’s work and sponsored three symposia in the HIV Vaccines for Developing Countries series: Immune Correlates of Protection held in Boston, Massachusetts in April 1998; Vaccinating Against the Leading Infectious Killers of Children held in Dakar, Senegal in December 1998; and Prioritizing Vaccine Candidates for Human Trials held in Boston in October 1999. UNAIDS also co-sponsored Africa Now! A Leadership Summit to Define African Priorities for AIDS held in Boston, Massachusetts in November 2000. For more information, visit http://www.unaids.org.
